How to Design a Shortlet Apartment That Guests Will Absolutely Love

If you are running a shortlet apartment in Nigeria, there is one truth you must accept early: your interior design is not just decoration — it is your marketing. The moment a potential guest sees your listing photos, they have already decided whether your apartment is worth their money. And when they walk through that door for the first time, the design either confirms their expectations or disappoints them. There is no middle ground.

Start With a Design Theme (and Stick to It)

One of the most common mistakes shortlet owners make is mixing furniture and decor from different styles without any cohesion. You will see a Victorian-style couch sitting next to a plastic dining table, and a chandelier hanging above both. It does not work. Choose a design direction — whether that is modern minimalist, contemporary African, or warm industrial — and let every piece of furniture, every colour on the wall, and every accessory follow that direction.

For the Nigerian market, modern minimalist designs tend to perform best. Guests appreciate clean lines, neutral tones like beige, white, and grey, with occasional pops of colour from throw pillows, artwork, or statement chairs. This approach photographs well, appeals to a broad audience, and is easier to maintain.

Do Not Underestimate the Bedroom

The bedroom is where your guest will spend the most time, yet many shortlet owners invest heavily in the living room and treat the bedroom as an afterthought. Invest in a quality mattress — this alone can determine whether a guest leaves a glowing review or a scathing one. Get proper bedding: crisp white sheets, fluffy pillows, and a clean duvet. These are not luxuries; they are the bare minimum for a professional shortlet.

Add blackout curtains so your guests can sleep in without the Lagos sun waking them at 6 AM. Include bedside tables with functional lamps and at least two power outlets within arm's reach. These are small details that separate a forgettable stay from a memorable one.

The Kitchen Must Be Functional, Not Just Pretty

A good number of your guests — especially those staying for more than two nights — will want to cook. Your kitchen needs to have the basics: a working gas cooker or electric hob, a microwave, a kettle, pots and pans, plates, cutlery, and a refrigerator. Stock it with essentials like cooking oil, salt, sugar, and tea bags. This small gesture costs you virtually nothing but leaves a lasting impression.

Prioritise Reliable Power and Fast Internet

No amount of beautiful design will save your reviews if there is no electricity or the WiFi is unreliable. In Nigeria, power supply is not something you can leave to chance. Install an inverter with sufficient battery backup for at least 12 hours, and have a generator on standby. For internet, invest in a proper fibre connection or a reliable 4G/5G router. Business travellers especially will not return to a property where they could not join their Zoom calls.

Small Touches That Make a Big Difference

Leave a welcome note with the guest's name. Provide a printed or digital guide to the neighbourhood — where to eat, where to shop, how to get around. Stock the bathroom with hotel-quality toiletries rather than random supermarket brands. Place fresh towels neatly folded on the bed. These details cost you a fraction of your nightly rate but can be the difference between a four-star and a five-star review.

Your shortlet apartment is a product, and like any product, its packaging matters. Invest in the design, keep everything clean and functional, and your guests will not only come back — they will tell their friends.
